TECHNIQUE CLASS: each class will explore fundamentals that are integral to understanding the range and detail of the Trisha Brown Dance Company movement style. Emphasis is placed on learning movement as the Company does: with attention to detail, spatial clarity, performance quality, and an awareness of dancing with others. Classes begin with a warm-up emphasizing the coordination of alignment, breath, and weight to bring space, direction, and flow of energy through the joints. Concepts emphasized in the warm-up will be applied works from different periods in the Company repertory.

Morning Technique & Repertory: Glacial Decoy

Students will learn full-bodied phrase work from, Glacial Decoy (1979), Trisha Brown’s first work for the proscenium, which she has described as “about change—of direction, shape, velocity, mood, state. There are total, instantaneous shifts from one state to another. It’s unpredictable, unlikely, continuous, always going in an unexpected direction.”

For technique portion, see description above. This class will focus on M.O. (1995) set to Bach’s Musical Offering. Brown’s mission was to create the movement equivalent of Bach’s polyphonic techniques. She divided the body into two parts, upper and lower, and then recombined them in endless combinations, to, as Brown states, “locate both theme and counterpoint in one body”. Expect rich, challenging dancing.

This class will explore Set and Reset, TBDC’s signature work, which has been described as seductively fluid, unpredictably geometric, falling fast, slow and at odd angles. Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times has said “ Set and Reset is unmistakably Miss Brown at her most tantalizing.”

For technique portion, see description above. Concepts emphasized in the warm-up, such as use of weight, movement initiation, and spatial clarity will be applied to phrases from Newark (1987), a work from the Valiant cycle, in which Trisha was exploring what it means for dancers to approach their physical limits. In Brown’s words, Newark is “powerful, geometric dancing.”

Teacher Biographies:
Cori Olinghouse was a member of Trisha Brown Dance Company from 2002-2006. She was an original cast member of how long does the subject linger on the edge of the volume… She also worked with Brown on O Zlozony /O Composite for the Paris Opera Ballet, which she later performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Cori is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique (graduated from Manhattan Center for the Alexander Technique) and maintains a private practice in Brooklyn and Manhattan. She teaches regularly at TBDC intensives and workshops, and has taught at Bennington College, Fordham University, Rutgers University, Hunter College, Sushi Visual and Performing Arts Gallery, London Contemporary Dance School, and Tseh Moscow Summer Dance School. She recently performed in Bill Irwin’s The Happiness Lecture at the Philadelphia Theater Company. Her own work has been presented at Dixon Place, Bennington College, The Brooklyn Museum, The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Judson Church, Spoke the Hub, and the Movement Research Improvisation Festival. She is currently a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence.
Shelley Senter was a member of Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1986-1991. She continues to be involved with the Company as a guest artist, reconstructing, adapting, and staging choreography on professional companies such as Ballet Rambert (Opal Loop) and the Lyon Opera Ballet (Newark, Astral Convertible and Set and Reset/Reset), and in settings such as the Choreographic Research Center at Royaumont Abby in Paris (Foret Foray), the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle and Addison Art Museum (Floor of the Forest and Group Primary Accumulation). She has directed five Set and Reset/Reset projects (Mills College, University of Colorado, P.A.R.T.S., CNDC Angers, and Lyon Opera Ballet), collaborating with visual artists from France, Belgium, California and Colorado, as well as Glacial Decoy Redux (Mills College). Shelley has taught both independently and for TBDC around the world, most recently at Impulstanz in Vienna. She has been critically recognized and awarded for her distinct approach to movement, as an independent artist, as a former member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company as well as a steward of Yvonne Rainer’s Trio A. An internationally renowned teacher of the Alexander Technique, she maintains a private practice in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Keith Thompson danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1992 - 2001, serving as rehearsal assistant from 1999-2001. He danced several major roles in the repertory and was an original cast member in M.O., L’Orfeo and Canto/Pianto, El Trilogy, and Twelve Ton Rose. Keith has taught numerous TBDC Technique and Repertory workshops in the U.S. and abroad. He co-directed Set and Reset/Reset at University of Utah, and directed the Canto/Pianto reconstruction at Hofstra University. Keith received his MFA Research Fellowship in Dance from Bennington College in 2003. He formed his own company, danceTactics performance group in 2005 and he currently resides in New York City.
Stacy Spence danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1997-2006. He was an original cast member of L’Orfeo, Canto Pianto, 5 Part Weather Invention, Rapture to Leon James, Groove and Countermove, Geometry of Quiet, PRESENT TENSE, and how long does the subject linger on the edge of the volume… Stacy received his MFA from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and he continues to lead classes, workshops, lectures and restaging projects for TBDC. Most recently, he directed Newark Re-Worked at CNDC Angers. He has danced and collaborated with Polly Motley and filmmaker Molly Davies, along with numerous others. Stacy’s own work has been commissioned by EDge at London Contemporary Dance School, The University of New Mexico, and OtherShore Dance Company. Stacy is currently a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence.

The final lecture in a series of five lectures celebrating TBDC's 40th Anniversary Season will feature former TBDC dancers Eva Karczag, Lisa Kraus, Stacy Spence, Keith Thompson, Stephen Petronio, and Vicky Shick. Having all pursued their own choreographic careers, they will gather to discuss how their time with TBDC influenced their own choreography.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
BIOS
Stacy Spence danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1997-2006. Stacy received his MFA from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and he continues to lead classes, workshops, lectures and restaging projects for TBDC. He has danced and collaborated with Polly Motley and filmmaker Molly Davies, along with numerous others. Stacy’s own work has been commissioned by EDge at London Contemporary Dance School, The University of New Mexico, and OtherShore Dance Company. Vicky Shick danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1980-1986, during which time she received a New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award. Shick has collaborated with many other performers and choreographers and has created her own work for the last twenty years. In 2003, she received another Bessie for Choreographic Achievement for her collaborations with visual artist Barbara Kilpatrick. In New York City, Shick teaches for TBDC, Movement Research, and Hunter College. Shick is a 2006 grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow for 2008-2009.
Keith Thompson danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1992 - 2001, serving as rehearsal assistant from 1999-2001. Keith received his MFA Research Fellowship in Dance from Bennington College in 2003. He formed his own company, danceTactics performance group in 2005 and he currently resides in New York City.
Eva Karczag has practiced, taught, and advocated explorative methods of dance making for the last three decades. She danced with Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1979-85. She has performed her own work in diverse locations including St. Mark's Church and Judson Church (NYC), Dance Umbrella (London), Dancehouse (Melbourne) and most recently in durational performance/installations at the Laban Institute (London) and Herbert Art Gallery (Coventry). She has an MFA degree (Dance Research Fellow) from Bennington College and has taught dance at major colleges and studios throughout the U.S., Australia, and Europe, including a sustained period of teaching on the faculty of the European Dance Development Center, (EDDC) Arnhem, The Netherlands from 1990-2002. Current activities include collaborating on the development of a long term performance project, Red Thread, with Lisa Kraus and Vicky Shick.
Lisa Kraus danced with the Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1976-1982. Her own work has been presented extensively in the US, Europe and Australia. Kraus has been awarded Choreographer’s Fellowships from National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Independence Foundation. She was on the faculty of the European Dance Development Center in the Netherlands for a decade and has also served as adjunct faculty member at Swarthmore College, Temple University, and New York University, as well as guest teaching at numerous schools and arts centers inter/nationally. She currently lives near Philadelphia where she writes for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Dance Magazine. Her current project – Red Thread – is a collaboration with former TBDC colleagues Eva Karczag and Vicky Shick.
Stephen Petronio is Artistic Director/Choreographer of the Stephen Petronio Company. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and received a BA from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, where he began dancing in 1974. Initially inspired by the dancing of Rudolf Nureyev and Steve Paxton, Petronio was the first male dancer of the Trisha Brown Company (1979 to 1986). He founded Stephen Petronio Company in 1984 and has gone on to build a unique and powerful language of movement in collaboration with contemporary innovators in the fields of music, visual arts and fashion.
He has a long track record of inciting interdisciplinary collaborations that blend dance with the cutting edge of music, fashion and. the visual arts. He has worked with some of New York's finest, including; Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Rufus Wainwright, Son Lux, Nico Muhly, Cindy Sherman, Donald Baechler, Benjamin Cho, Imitation of Christ, Tony Cohen and Rachel Roy.

TEACHER BIOS
Elena Demyanenkois a Russian-born graduate of the Academy of Theatrical Arts (Moscow) and has been dancing, choreographing and teaching in New York City since 2001. Elena was a member of Stephen Petronio Company from 2003-2008 and has performed with Pavel Zustiak, Lindsey Dietz Marchant, Jimena Paz and in Martha Clarke's Garden of Earthly Delights. She was the recipient of EMPAC Dance Movies Commission in 2007. She joined the Company in June of 2009.
Samuel von Wentz hails from the land of open spaces, strong Christian values, and monthly livestock auctions. He left the North Dakota ranch behind, and explored the perilous mountains of Idyllwild, CA for many years. Samuel has worked and studied with Gerald Casel, whom he met while he was continuing his academic adventure at NYU Tisch. He joined the Company in June of 2009 and enjoys jigsaw puzzles and origami.

BIOS
Peter Eleey is Curator at the Walker Art Center, where he organized Trisha Brown: So That the Audience Does Not Know Whether I Have Stopped Dancing, a survey of the dancer and choreographer’s work on paper that will tour to the Musée d’art contemporain in Lyon in September. Prior to joining the Walker in 2007 he was Curator & Producer at Creative Time in New York, where he organized a wide range of multidisciplinary projects, exhibitions, and events with artists including Doug Aitken, William Forsythe, Mike Nelson, Cai Guo-Qiang, and many others.
Susan Rosenberg, a former curator of modern and contemporary art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Seattle Art Museum, is a professor of art history at St. John's University in New York. She has contributed to exhibitions and catalogues dedicated to the work of Christian Marclay, Alice Neel and Gabriel Orozco, among others, and her reviews of contemporary art have appeared in Art in America International. In 2003 she worked with Trisha Brown to realize It's a Draw/Live Feed at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; her essay, "Trisha Brown: The Signs of Gesture," was published for an exhibition of Brown's graphic work at the Contemporary Art Museum/Institute for Research on Art, Tampa, Florida in 2007. She is completing a book on Trisha Brown and choreography as visual art.

GUILLAUME BERNARDI is a Toronto-based stage director. His work covers a wide range of genres, from theater and opera to movement pieces. Recent directorial projects include Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for the Frankfurt Opera and the Canadian Opera Company and Bas-reliefs, a movement piece presented in Montreal and Toronto. He is a professor in Drama Studies at York University in Toronto. He has worked on all Trisha Brown’s opera projects apart from Carmen. He was in particular Trisha Brown’s assistant for her production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, an experience about which he has written repeatedly.

BIOS
Diane Madden has been a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company since 1980, acting as Rehearsal Director from 1984-2000 and returning to this role in 2010. The 10 year interim was spent as Special Projects Director re-viving repertory both within the company and at Paris Opera Ballet, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Scottish National Ballet, and Ballet Rambert. Diane continues to dance for the company in the creative process as well as in performance. Her teaching incorporates anatomically based technique, improvisation, composition, and performance skills. Another is with dancer/choreographer Polly Motley to be performed throughout New England. She received a New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award in 1989, and the Princess Grace Foundation has recognized her with two awards, in 1986 for Performance and in 1994 for Sustained Achievement.
Julie Martin graduated from Radcliffe College and received a Masters degree in Russian Studies from Columbia University. In 1966 she worked with Robert Whitman during the performance series 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering. She joined the staff of Experiments in Art and Technology in 1967, and over the years worked closely with Billy Klüver on projects and activities of the organization, including the project to help Fujiko Nakaya develop a fog sculpture for Opal Loop -- first at the DC generating station on Lafayette Street and then for the large stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Currently she is working on a series of films that document the ten artists’ performances at 9 Evenings. Also she is coordinating producer for a new performance by Robert Whitman and is editing a book on the art and technology writings of Billy Klüver.

This first in a series of five lectures celebrating TBDC's 40th Anniversary Season will feature a lively discussion with veteran dancers Diane Madden and Carolyn Lucas. Ms. Madden joined the Company in 1980, and was the Rehearsal Director from 1984-2000. She currently leads reconstruction projects for the Company. Ms. Lucas danced in the Company 1984 and has been Choreographic Assistant since 1994. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear behind-the-scenes stories from about on the creative process, and performing around the world with Trisha and the Company.

BIOS:
Wendy Perron, editor in chief of Dance Magazine, had a thirty-year career as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and writer. She was a member of the Trisha Brown Company in the 1970s, danced with many other choreographers, and led her own dance company in the 1980s. She appears in the documentary film “Retracing Steps: American Dance Since Postmodernism.” She has taught dance at many colleges including Princeton, Bennington, NYU, and dance centers like DTW and the Trisha Brown Studio. She has also been associate director of Jacob's Pillow and is currently artistic advisor for the Fall for Dance festival at NY City Center. Wendy has written for many publications including The New York Times, The Village Voice, and of course, Dance Magazine. She posts a blog at www.dancemagazine.com/blogs/wendy.
Carolyn Lucas (Choreographic Assistant) has been a member of the Company since 1984. In 1993 she was appointed Choreographic Assistant and since then has been involved with the creation of Brown’s works in dance and opera. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and received a B.F.A. from SUNY Purchase in 1984.
Diane Madden has been a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company since 1980, acting as Rehearsal Director from 1984-2000 and returning to this role in 2010. The 10 year interim was spent as Special Projects Director re-viving repertory both within the company and at Paris Opera Ballet, NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Scottish National Ballet, and Ballet Rambert. Diane continues to dance for the company in the creative process as well as in performance. Her teaching incorporates anatomically based technique, improvisation, composition, and performance skills. Technique Class: each class will explore fundamentals that are integral to understanding the range and detail of the Trisha Brown Dance Company movement style. Emphasis is placed on learning movement as the Company does: with attention to detail, spatial clarity, performance quality, and an awareness of dancing with others. Classes begin with a warm-up emphasizing the coordination of alignment, breath, and weight to bring space, direction, and flow of energy through the joints. Concepts emphasized in technique will be applied to a work from a different period in the Company repertory.

Not metered time or measured time but stranger notions like the volume of time, past time, time peeling away.”

Deborah Jowitt of the Village Voice said this after seeing the work: “I imagine dancing anyone else’s choreography after Brown’s would be hard. You’d feel like you’d gone from researching high-energy particles to taking freshman science.”

Teacher Biographies:
Mariah Maloney was a member of Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1995-2002. She performed as a featured soloist and ensemble dancer, creating original roles in Trisha Brown’s Music cycle as well performing the legendary works: Set and Reset, Newark, Astral Converted and For MG: The Movie, among others. For Mariah, the greatest pedagogical reward comes when she observes a student’s transformation and recognizes that her teaching methods and presence have helped facilitate the student’s growth and development. She focuses on breath and body awareness to help students develop proper alignment, full range of motion, greater coordination, and stability. Today she continues her relationship with TBDC by serving as an international guest artist and directing re-staging projects. In December 2008, The Columbia College Chicago Dance Center premiered Mariah’s re-staging of Set and Reset/Reset. Mariah’s choreography has been presented in New York at Judson Church, The Kitchen, St. Marks Church, BRIC Theater and The Brooklyn Museum. Maloney earned a BFA from Purchase College and a MFA from Hollins/ADF. Mariah is currently an assistant professor at The College at Brockport SUNY.
Cori Olinghouse danced with the Trisha Brown Dance Company from 2002 to 2006. She was an original cast member of how long does the subject linger on the edge of the volume...She also worked with Brown on O Zlozony /O Composite for the Paris Opera Ballet, which she later performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Cori will finish her certification in the Alexander Technique in February 2010; her teaching is highly informed by this method. She teaches regularly at TBDC intensives and workshops, and has taught at Bennington College, Fordham University, Rutgers University, Hunter College, Sushi Visual and Performing Arts Gallery, London Contemporary Dance School, and Tseh Moscow Summer Dance School. She recently performed in Bill Irwin's The Happiness Lecture at the Philadelphia Theater Company. Her own work has been presented at Dixon Place, Bennington College, The Brooklyn Museum, The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Judson Church, Spoke the Hub, and the Movement Research Improvisation Festival. She is currently a Movement Research Artist-in-Residence.

Maramotti Collection will host a public meeting with Trisha Brown in conversation with Rossella Mazzaglia, professor at the DAMS – Bologna University (who has recently written an exhaustive monograph dedicated to Trisha Brown), and journalist and art critic Adriana Polveroni.
Focus of the meeting is the complex coreography by Trisha Brown that takes form as a continuous exploration of the space, not only for choosing non-traditional places to stage her dance, but also because of questioning the idea of space itself as an essential element of her work, which also involves the last theatrical production. A new scenario has literally opened, where coreography and the most advanced of figurative arts (Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Body Art and Performing Art) have interacted closely.
